I picked this up from another forum but thought it was worth reproducing here. It's not often that you find an accident commentary with video. (Here is the link to the original: http://www.advrider.com/forums/show...hp?t=522202.)

While I applaud the writer's willingness to share his mistakes, from viewing the video I would say there are a few more issues with the accident than he recognizes. One, passing on a double solid and the other, passing into a curve. The mitigating factor is that the car waved him by, but that did not exempt the rider from exercising due care. It's easy to miss in the video, but one frame of it in mid-slideout shows an oncoming car.

The gravel was a factor, but in addition to that it seems to me that the manoeuvre failed this basic test:

If I met myself coming the other way riding/driving in the same manner, what would be the likely result?

quote:
hitting a guard rail high sided on a wet road in gravel

I suppose it is not often that you get video of your crash, sometimes it is better if we do not, I made all of the mistakes that you could make, cold wet roads, a right hand turn which in Pa almost always means gravel in the corner. I was waved on by the car but it was a steep down hill which means even less traction. Minus some deep tissue damage to my arm and some serious bruising on my legs I limped away. I rode the bike back to the hotel 50 miles away with no clutch lever, the guys stopped at each intersection to stop traffic so I coulds slow down but not have to come to a complete stop.

Being a optomist in life I took my mistake and turned it into a commercial for my company figuring to make the best of it.

I have been riding for 35 years, the best advice I ever got from one of my friends was.

You know that voice in your head that asks "Should I do this" at our age it is better to say if you have to ask yourself should I make this pass, the answer should be always be NO

Video here if you care to watch me hit the guard rail the camera is rear facing. I am a riding instructor with the CSBA and use it to teach others form and technique, and to help keep riders from doing stupid stuff while not intending to be the example; there is no reason not to share a teachable moment ...Bob

When I took the MSF-BRC my instructor "Digger" was asked about "passing"
"Digger" replied, " I always ask myself if this pass is necessary" He then added, most times it isn't.

It's been MY mantra since

Too much throttle on a wet double centerline that he should not have been on? A video record of "lame riding" on many levels.

No accident here - criminally negligent conduct leading to an inevitable consequence.

Even before he fails to negotiate the curve during his unlawful passing over the double yellow, we see the rider failing to maintain control of is vehicle and crossing into the oncoming lanes.

I'm glad his injuries were not too severe, but I can't call this an accident - it was a direct, avoidable consequence of reckless, unlawful riding.

It is truly frightening that this fellow is an "instructor", teaching others how to ride in an unlawful and irresponsible manner.

That was no accident. That was a wreck trying to find a place to happen. That is a group I would not be riding with under any conditions. All of them were crossing the yellow line and the two handed wave was sure impressive.
